Outdoor Recreation for Community and Economic Development

A new provincial analysis shows outdoor recreation and adventure tourism contributed over $4.8 billion to B.C.’s economy in 2023. The sector supports thousands of jobs, strengthens rural communities, and drives sustainable economic diversification. confirming what many businesses and residents already know: outdoor recreation is essential to B.C.’s way of life.

Tourism Fernie is redefining destination marketing by funding outdoor recreation infrastructure with visitor dollars. Through initiatives like the Elk River Infrastructure and Amenity Project and AmbassadorWILD, they’re improving river access, supporting sustainable tourism, and ensuring Fernie’s “Trout Town” reputation is backed by well-managed, world-class fishing and recreation opportunities.

BC’s outdoor gear makers are rooted in the landscapes where their products are tested. With provincial support, this growing sector could deliver strong economic returns, good jobs, and alignment with government priorities.

Across BC, trails are blurring the line between transportation and recreation. They connect communities, boost health, reduce carbon, and draw visitors, proving a simple pathway can be a commuter route, playground, and tourism engine.

Maria Verdicchio knew about the proven physical health benefits of vigorous and sustained exercise and the mental health benefits of nature-based therapy, especially to treat youth-at-risk and people suffering with PTSD. But forest bathing hinted that the health benefits of outdoor recreation could be even bigger. 

Clear recreation planning turned Koocanusa from chaos into a stewardship success. Through collaboration, trail management, and positive community engagement, the Elk Valley Adventure & Dirt Riders Society proved that responsible recreation is possible.

The outdoors is for everyone—but creating spaces where everyone feels they truly belong requires intentional effort. Dirt bikers in B.C. are transforming their reputation from rugged thrill-seekers to environmental stewards. By investing in sustainable trail practices and collaborating with local groups, they’ve reduced erosion, improved trail safety, and enhanced community relations. Today, these riders balance recreation with conservation, reshaping perceptions of motorized outdoor activities.

The same geography that makes Nelson synonymous with skiing, means when the snow melts the Kootenay city is equally great for hiking. Access to mountain trails is what attracted Scott Matson to town in 2018. After hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, Scott moved from Nebraska to Nelson where he started Northern Ultralight, a company that makes backpacking gear inspired by his adventures.
