HBC Peers Creek Grand Re-Opening
Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning invites you to join us for a celebration of BC Trails Day with our grand re-opening of the HBC (1849) Heritage Trail from Peers Creek to Manson’s Camp. The 2021 catastrophic atmospheric river severely damaged the area surrounding the western end of the HBC Trail. Over the last three years, the HBC trail team has been working tirelessly to build a brand new, 3km section of trail to bypass the irreparable damage, and getting the rest of it back into tip top shape for trail users. We are pleased to announce it will soon be complete, and ready to be enjoyed by all.
Join us on BC Trails Day - Saturday June 1st – for an opening ceremony and self-guided hiking experience. Staged at the Peers Creek trailhead near Hope, the celebration will begin at 9:00am with special guest presenters including Hope Mountain Centre’s Trail Director Kelly Pearce and Assistant Trails Director Nate Brown, Chawathil First Nation representatives, Rick Herfst, Kelly Cooke, and Nancy Anderson.
Guests are invited to explore the trail at any time they wish. Beginning at 10am, experienced HMCOL staff and volunteers will embark on the trail at staggered times, and guests are welcome to join if they wish. At 10am, a group of trail runners from Hope BC Running Club will be the first to depart, running to Manson’s Camp and back (16km round-trip). Shortly after, a faster-paced group hiking the 16km round-trip to Manson’s Camp and back will be leaving as well. The trail to Manson’s Camp gains approximately 700 metres of cumulative elevation in 8km. Then a mid-paced group also hiking the full 16km will depart. Last to depart will be a slower group that will hike 5km return to a viewpoint 2.5km into the trail and back. Note that while these groups are experienced hikers and runners with first aid training and satellite communication devices, they are not functioning as hiking or running guides; just support out on the trail if available and needed. All event guests must be self-sufficient. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow but Hope Mountain Centre encourages all hikers and runners to be knowledgeable about the route and terrain, well-prepared and well-equipped with all of the Essentials for outdoor safety including appropriate clothing and outerwear, sufficient food and water, navigation and communication materials/devices, a high lumen headlamp, first aid kit, emergency shelter (ie bivvy or emergency blanket), fire starter, signaling device (whistle or mirror), a multitool, and sun protection. With the steep terrain, hiking poles, supportive backpack, and appropriate grippy footwear are also highly recommended.
To reach the HBC Trailhead at Peers Creek, drive 10 km east from Hope on Highway-5. Look for the Othello Exit 183 and turn right off the highway. A concrete logging bridge takes you over the Coquihalla River, connecting to the Peers Creek Forest Service Road (FSR). Follow the FSR 1.5km to the event. Note that the FSR is gravel with some potholes. Two-wheel-drive vehicles are fine but low-clearance vehicles are not recommended.
The event is being held in the wilderness so all guests whether hiking or not are encouraged to be prepared and dress accordingly. There is weak and spotty cell reception in the area, a pit toilet at the trailhead, and no running water.
Limited light snacks and drinks will be available, as well as HBC Trail merchandise for sale (cash only). Waterproof, topographical maps are available for $22, activewear tanktops for $25, activewear tshirts (mens and womens) for $30, and HBC mugs by the Muddy Bean for $30-$40 depending on size.

Webinar: The science and art of building volunteer partnerships
Volunteers power recreation in B.C. But it only works with the assistance of staff from private land owners, parks and various levels of government. Improving the function of these relationships is in everyone’s best interest. How we can do that better is the focus of Outdoor Recreation Council of BC’s April webinar.
A panel discussion will focus on applying new science to create more productive partnerships between volunteers and land managers. Danish recreation researcher Evald Bundgaard Iversen will present the results of his study into the motivations of volunteer trail builders and their interactions with land managers. Kelsey Johansen, from The Trails Research Hub, will put the research into a Canadian context and provide takeaways for land managers and volunteer groups. Kevin Eskelin, Regional Recreation Manager, Southern Interior East region for Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC) will share about the extent that RSTBC works with volunteer groups, how it manages its partnerships and the importance and role of those partnerships to RSTBC.
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC is a non-profit organization. These webinars are free, thanks to the support of our generous donors and sponsors. If you would like to support our work, consider donating or get in touch about sponsorship opportunities.

Webinar | Reconciliation and recreation: Advice and lessons from outdoor groups
This webinar is for recreation groups that want to get involved in reconciliation, but don’t know where to start. A panel of leaders in the outdoor recreation community will share stories of projects where a shared passion for the outdoors has brought benefits to their local First Nations. They’ll explain what worked and what didn’t, lessons learned and offer tips and advice for getting started and moving forward.
Rod Clapton will tell us how sitting down to a cup of coffee helped the BC Federation of Drift Fishers and local First Nations work out a resolution to challenging fishing conflicts on the lower Fraser River.
Thomas Schoen of First Journey Trails and the Indigenous Youth Mountain Bike Program will teach us how trail building and mountain biking is bringing health and economic benefits to First Nation communities across the province.
Uzi Valiante, a policy and advocacy volunteer with the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association, will explain how the club signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Squamish Nation.
And Irwin Oostindie will tell us how the Wild Bird Trust of BC is using Indigenous knowledge to rethink stewardship, and practicing reconciliation and redress with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation.
After the presentations a Q&A session will provide an opportunity to learn even more about how outdoor recreation can be a path to reconciliation. Full of tips, advice and practical and applicable examples, this is a webinar for anyone that wants to get involved in making B.C.’s outdoor spaces more equitable and sustainable.
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC is a non-profit organization. This webinar is free, thanks to the generous support of the Real Estate Foundation of BC.

Understand the "paradigm shift" in landscape planning and management
The provincial government is drastically changing how it plans and manages the use of land and water. The result is a profusion of announcements, pilot projects, new policies and too many acronyms. Confusion is understandable. This webinar is designed to help.
In a one hour webinar hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC, Garry Merkel will explain where the changes are coming from and what they mean for outdoor recreation.
Merkel is a member of the Tahltan Nation and a registered professional forester based in the Kootenays. He co-chaired the 2020 Old Growth Strategic Review, including a paradigm shift in how the provincial government plans and manages Crown lands and waters. Merkel is one of the top experts in landscape planning and First Nations relations in the province. He will speak directly to the potential implications of all the changes on recreational access, including deactivation of backcountry roads, wildlife closures and type of use zoning. We’re setting aside plenty of time for the audience to ask him questions.
This webinar is valuable for anyone involved and interested in the future of recreational access on Crown land. You will leave with a better understanding of what is going on, why now, and action items for you and your group.
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC is a non-profit organization. These webinars are free, thanks to the support of our generous donors and sponsors. If you would like to support our work, consider donating or get in touch about sponsorship opportunities.

Webinar | Reconciliation and recreation: Indigenous perspectives
In B.C. every recreation group works and plays on the traditional territory of one or more First Nations. We want to take part in reconciliation, be allies for Indigenous people and do things the right way. But we often don’t know where to start or how to behave.
For our January webinar, representatives from two First Nations will join the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. to share their perspective and ideas. Both have extensive experience working with the recreation community and managing access to their traditional territories.
Roxanne Joe is the Lands and Resources Project Coordinator for the Lil’wat Nation and is on the Nation’s council. She’s an avid mountain biker and volunteers with programs that introduce Indigenous youth to outdoor sports. Her job often involves working with recreation groups on access issues to trail networks and parks in the Pemberton area.
Saya Masso is the Lands and Resources Manager for the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. Their traditional territories include Tofino and the busy surrounding area. He will share how the Nation is working with the recreation and tourism sectors to find a sustainable balance for residents and visitors in the Clayoquot Sound area.
Anyone interested in working with First Nations in a positive and productive way should find this webinar insightful and interesting.
The webinar will begin with presentations from each panelist, followed by a live Q&A session with opportunities to ask questions. Register in advance.
The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC is a non-profit organization. This webinar is free, thanks to the generous support of the Real Estate Foundation of BC.

Webinar: Improve your volunteer recruitment and engagement
Volunteers are the heart of outdoor recreation. Most non-profits couldn’t function without them. They build trails, maintain infrastructure, organize projects, attend meetings, set agendas, raise money and so much more. But finding and engaging volunteers is a constant challenge and one that is getting harder. Volunteer Canada says 65 percent of nonprofits are struggling to recruit enough volunteers, forcing many to cut back on what they do. That’s especially true in outdoor recreation, where a surge in use of outdoor places is adding workload and leading to volunteer burnout.
To help the outdoor recreation sector tackle the volunteer crisis the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC is hosting a webinar focused on recruiting and engaging volunteers. Panelists will explain the present state of volunteering in B.C., share best practices for finding and retaining volunteers, provide insight into recruiting younger generations, and talk about tried and tested case studies and tips.
If your organization is struggling to recruit or engage enough volunteers, this is a webinar you won’t want to miss.
Panelists include:
Dorothee Birker a manager of community services for KCR Community Resources, which runs a volunteer recruitment service in the Okanagan.
Katelyn Bissat the provincial network coordinator for NatureKids BC
Adrian Bostock the operations manager for The Shuswap Trail Alliance

Webinar: How to make stewardship part of your organization’s mission
Date: Tuesday November 14, 2023
Time: 1:00 to 2:15 pm PT
Cost: Free
More people are recreating outdoors than ever before. Biodiversity is under threat. Habitat loss continues. And climate change poses an existential threat. As highlighted in the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC’s new Stewardship Inspiration Guide, outdoor recreation groups can play an important role in repairing, enhancing and protecting the province’s outdoor spaces. But for volunteers and not-for-profit organizations, carrying out a meaningful and impactful project can be daunting.
In a virtual discussion hosted by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC, a panel of experts will show that stewardship is doable for any group. The webinar will define stewardship, show the value of projects for the public and the people doing the good work, help groups identify projects that fit with their expertise and highlight the support and funding that’s out there.
The panellists are:
Kim Reeves, President, 4 Wheel Drive Association of BC
Jacquie Rasmussen, Executive Director, Lillooet Regional Invasive Species Society
Robyn Hutchings, Stewardship Coordinator, BC Marine Trails
Kevin Eskelin, Regional Recreation Manager, Southern Interior East Region for Recreation Sites and Trails BC
The webinar will begin with presentations from each panelist, followed by a live Q&A session with opportunities to ask questions.
