Join our team: Communications officer (youth position) 

BC Marine Trails

We are looking for a new team member to support us with social media and communications, member relations, and annual initiatives such as BC Trails Day.

Position: Communications Officer
Location: Remote (home-based in BC)
Term: Full-time, 12-month contract
Compensation: $25/hour | 35 hours/week
Deadline to apply: Wednesday, April 23, 2025 (interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis)

Please note: This position is co-funded through ECO Canada’s Digital Skills for Youth program and is open only to applicants aged 30 and under at the time of hiring.

ABOUT ORCBC

The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC) is a non-profit umbrella organization that represents a wide range of outdoor recreation groups across the province - from hikers, paddlers, and mountain bikers to equestrians, anglers, and off-road vehicle users. We work to ensure public access to the outdoors, advocate for responsible recreation, and build bridges between outdoor communities, government, and industry.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for a creative, organized, and outdoors-loving communicator to help us expand our reach and impact. If you’re passionate about social media, digital storytelling, and building community — and you want your work to support access to nature — this could be the job for you!

As our Communications Officer, you’ll help grow our online presence, connect with members and partners, and support initiatives like BC Trails Day, BC Rivers Day, and our 2026 anniversary conference.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications & project support (80%)

  • Create compelling content for social media, newsletters, blog posts, and our annual report

  • Design graphics, infographics, and short videos to support campaigns and events

  • Monitor digital metrics and suggest ways to improve outreach

  • Support online webinars, digital outreach campaigns, and event promotion

  • Maintain our communications library (photos, videos, design files, etc.)

  • Assist with media outreach and press materials

Member relations & fundraising (20%)

  • Be the first point of contact for member and partner inquiries

  • Coordinate annual giving and membership campaigns (emails, tracking, reports)

  • Send membership invoices and keep contact records and databases up to date

  • Other tasks as needed

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • A degree or diploma in communications, marketing, business, or a related field or equivalent experience

  • At least 2 years of relevant work or volunteer experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Experience with Canva, Mailchimp, Google Workspace, and Squarespace (or similar tools)

  • Strong content creation and basic design/video editing skills

  • Great time management and ability to work independently

  • A collaborative mindset and comfort working with a small remote team

  • A passion for outdoor recreation and familiarity with BC’s outdoor scene is a big asset

ADDITIONAL INFO & REQUIREMENTS

  • This is a remote position based in British Columbia.

  • You must have access to your own computer, printer, software, and a reliable internet connection.

  • Applicants must be 30 years old or younger at the time of hiring to qualify for this ECO Canada-funded opportunity.
